Pierre Omidyar is a French-born Iranian-American technology entrepreneur, software engineer and philanthropist best known as the founder of eBay. Early in his career he worked at Claris, an Apple subsidiary, on the team behind MacDraw II, and in 1991 he co-founded the pen-computing startup Ink Development, later renamed eShop and acquired by Microsoft in 1996. In 1995, at 28, he wrote the original code for an online person-to-person auction site and launched it on Labor Day; that venue became eBay, which he chaired between 1998 and 2015. With his wife Pamela he founded Omidyar Network in 2004, and his other ventures include the Democracy Fund, the Ulupono Initiative and the Luminate Group. Since 2010 he has led Honolulu Civil Beat, an investigative and public affairs news service, and in 2013 he created First Look Media, a journalism venture. His honors include the Great Immigrants Award (2006) and France's National Order of Merit (2012), and he has been affiliated with the Santa Fe Institute. Omidyar speaks on building the internet economy, trust in online marketplaces, impact investing and the future of independent journalism.
