Matt Mullenweg is an American web developer and entrepreneur best known as co-founder of WordPress, the open-source publishing platform that powers a vast share of the web. He began blogging on the b2 platform in 2002, and in 2003, after its developer stepped away, he and Mike Little forked the code to create WordPress and released it under the GNU General Public License. He also helped launch Ping-O-Matic in 2004 and worked at CNET before setting out on his own. In 2005 he founded Automattic as a fully distributed company, an early model for remote work, and he became its chief executive in 2014. Under his leadership Automattic acquired WooCommerce in 2015, The Atavist Magazine in 2018, Tumblr in 2019, Pocket Casts in 2021 and Beeper in 2024. He also founded the WordCamp conference series and the WordPress Foundation. In 2016 he received the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment for helping make online publishing open to everyone. As a speaker he offers a builder's perspective on open source, distributed teams and the future of the open web.
