Book Tony Fernandes
Tony Fernandes is a Malaysian entrepreneur who turned AirAsia, a failing government-linked carrier, into a publicly listed low-cost airline. A trained accountant, he audited briefly for Virgin Atlantic, served as financial controller of Richard Branson's Virgin Communications in London from 1987 to 1989 and then joined Warner Music, eventually becoming its vice president for Southeast Asia. When Time Warner announced its merger with AOL he left to pursue a budget-airline dream. On the advice of then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in 2001, he bought an existing airline rather than starting one, mortgaging his home to take over AirAsia, which then had two Boeing 737s and heavy debts, for a single ringgit. Within a year the airline broke even and cleared its debts, and its 2004 stock offering was oversubscribed. Fernandes has credited timing, as leasing costs and airline layoffs after September 11 worked in his favor. He went on to build the Tune Group, including Tune Hotels and Tune Talk, and owned Caterham Group and a majority of Queens Park Rangers. He has been appointed a CBE.
