Book Dara Khosrowshahi
Dara Khosrowshahi is the chief executive officer of Uber and the former CEO of Expedia Group, which he ran for 12 years. Born in Iran in 1969, he left with his family at nine on the eve of the 1978 revolution, lived for a time in southern France and settled in Tarrytown, New York, where he graduated from the Hackley School. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Brown University in 1991 and joined the investment bank Allen & Company as an analyst. A chance assignment explaining deal figures to Barry Diller led him to Diller's companies in 1998, first at USA Networks, where he rose from senior vice president of strategic planning to president, and then as chief financial officer of IAC. After IAC bought Expedia, he became Expedia's CEO in August 2005, and during his tenure the company's gross bookings quadrupled and its pre-tax earnings doubled. Ernst & Young named him Pacific Northwest Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013. He has served on the boards of BET.com, Hotels.com and The New York Times Company.
