Book Bill Browder
Bill Browder is the American-born British financier who co-founded Hermitage Capital Management and became the driving force behind the Magnitsky Act. Before Hermitage he worked at Boston Consulting Group and Salomon Brothers. His Hermitage Fund was at one point the largest foreign portfolio investor in Russia, and in 1997 it posted the top performance of any fund in the world. Browder's approach was shareholder activism, which put him in direct conflict with Russian giants such as Gazprom, Surgutneftegaz and Sidanco. In November 2005 he was turned away at the Russian border, deported to Britain and labeled a national-security threat. When Russia's Interior Ministry raided Hermitage and its outside counsel Firestone Duncan in June 2007, Browder asked the firm's tax chief, Sergei Magnitsky, to look into the seizures; Magnitsky's findings, arrest and death in custody became the basis of Browder's global campaign for sanctions laws bearing Magnitsky's name. He told the story in his 2015 book Red Notice, and he has since been knighted.
