The War on Drugs are the Philadelphia rock band led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Adam Granduciel, winners of the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album for A Deeper Understanding (2017). Granduciel founded the group in 2005 with his close collaborator Kurt Vile, and their debut album, Wagonwheel Blues, arrived in 2008 before Vile left to focus on his solo career, leaving Granduciel as the band's only constant member. Slave Ambient (2011) drew favorable reviews and a long tour, and Lost in the Dream (2014), written as Granduciel battled isolation and depression after years on the road, became their breakthrough, featuring "Red Eyes" and "Under the Pressure" and winning the Libera Award for Record of the Year. During its recording drummer Charlie Hall joined full-time. The band then signed to Atlantic Records for A Deeper Understanding, which featured the eleven-minute single "Thinking of a Place," and followed with I Don't Live Here Anymore (2021). Today the band includes bassist David Hartley, keyboardist Robbie Bennett, Hall, saxophonist and keyboardist Jon Natchez, guitarist Anthony LaMarca and percussionist Eliza Hardy Jones. Their sound fuses heartland rock, krautrock pulse and shimmering, layered guitars into long, widescreen songs.
