Book Mogwai
Mogwai are the Glasgow band that helped define post-rock, building long instrumental pieces from hushed melodies into towering walls of distorted guitar. Formed in 1995 by guitarist Stuart Braithwaite, bassist Dominic Aitchison and drummer Martin Bulloch, with multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns joining soon after, the band took its name from the creatures in Gremlins. Their debut, Young Team (1997), on Glasgow's Chemikal Underground, became a landmark of the genre, followed by Come On Die Young, Rock Action, Happy Songs for Happy People, Mr. Beast and The Hawk Is Howling. Later albums including Hardcore Will Never Die, but You Will, Rave Tapes and Every Country's Sun appeared on the band's own Rock Action Records, with Temporary Residence handling North America. As the Love Continues (2021) earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and The Bad Fire arrived in 2025. Mogwai are also sought-after soundtrack composers, scoring the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait and the French television series Les Revenants, among others. Their concerts are famous for their sheer volume and dynamic range, moving from near silence to overwhelming crescendos.
