Book Cake
Sacramento rock band Cake formed in 1991 and is led by singer John McCrea and trumpeter and keyboardist Vince DiFiore, the two constants through every lineup. Guitarist Xan McCurdy, drummer Todd Roper and bassist Daniel McCallum round out the current group. The band is known for McCrea's dry, sardonic lyrics and deadpan vocals, set against a mix of influences that takes in norteño, mariachi, country, funk, disco, folk and hip-hop. After self-releasing Motorcade of Generosity (1994), Cake signed with Capricorn Records and scored with "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle". Fashion Nugget (1996) brought the breakout hit "The Distance", and Prolonging the Magic (1998) delivered "Never There", a No. 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Comfort Eagle (2001), their first Columbia album, added "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", followed by Pressure Chief (2004). After launching their own label, Upbeat Records, they released Showroom of Compassion (2011), which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. They also headlined several editions of their own Unlimited Sunshine Tour. Live, Cake offers witty, groove-heavy sets anchored by that signature trumpet.
