The Smashing Pumpkins are the Chicago alternative rock band with two Grammy Awards from eleven nominations, both for Best Hard Rock Performance, for "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "The End Is the Beginning Is the End." Singer and guitarist Billy Corgan started the band in 1988 with James Iha on guitar, D'arcy Wretzky on bass and Jimmy Chamberlin on drums, and today Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin lead the band. Their debut, Gish (1991), became an underground success, and Siamese Dream (1993), with "Today" and "Disarm," made them stars of the alternative rock boom. The double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) entered the Billboard 200 at number one and produced "1979" and "Tonight, Tonight," whose video won Video of the Year and Best Visual Effects at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. Adore (1998) and Machina/The Machines of God (2000) followed before the band split in 2000. Corgan revived the group in 2006, releasing Zeitgeist (2007), Oceania (2012) and Monuments to an Elegy (2014), and the reunited core trio has since issued Cyr (2020), the three-part rock opera Atum (2022) and Aghori Mhori Mei (2024).
