Book X Japan
Formed in Chiba in 1982 by singer Toshi and drummer-pianist Yoshiki, X Japan is a Japanese rock band credited with helping to invent visual kei, Japan's flamboyant answer to Western glam. The group began with fast, symphonic power metal and later moved toward progressive rock and sweeping ballads, becoming one of the first Japanese acts to reach the mainstream while on an independent label. Originally called simply X, they issued their debut album Vanishing Vision (1988) on Yoshiki's own Extasy Records and broke through with Blue Blood (1989). Jealousy (1991), the single-track mini-album Art of Life (1993) and Dahlia (1996) followed, with the last three each opening at number one in Japan. Fan favorites include "Endless Rain," "Kurenai," "Silent Jealousy," "Rusty Nail," "Tears," "Forever Love" and "Scars." The band played a series of five sold-out New Year's Eve shows at the Tokyo Dome through 1997, then reunited in 2007 with the new song "I.V." and soon played its first overseas concert in Hong Kong, adding Sugizo on lead guitar. X Japan delivers theatrical, high-intensity arena rock.
