Book Primus
Primus took shape in 1984 in El Sobrante, California, built around the virtuosic bass playing and offbeat vocals of Les Claypool. Today Claypool is joined by drummer John "Hoffer" Hoffman and guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde. The classic trio of Claypool, LaLonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander debuted on the live album Suck on This (1989), followed by the studio debut Frizzle Fry (1990). Signing with Interscope in 1991, they broke into the mainstream with Sailing the Seas of Cheese and the single "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver". Pork Soda (1993), home of the rock hit "My Name Is Mud", and Tales from the Punchbowl (1995), featuring "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver", both reached the Billboard 200 top ten. The band also wrote the original theme song for South Park. Further albums include Brown Album (1997), Antipop (1999), Green Naugahyde (2011), the Willy Wonka reinterpretation Primus & the Chocolate Factory With the Fungi Ensemble (2014) and The Desaturating Seven (2017). Primus has earned a Grammy nomination, and their concerts are famous for virtuosic, funk-metal jams and a gloriously weird sense of humor.
