Mastodon won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2018 with "Sultan's Curse," one of six nominations for the Atlanta heavy metal band. Formed in 2000 by bassist and singer Troy Sanders, guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher and drummer and singer Brann Dailor, the group kept that lineup intact for 24 years. Its 2002 debut, Remission, drew immediate acclaim, and its second album, Leviathan, a concept record built on Moby-Dick, was named album of the year by Revolver, Kerrang! and Terrorizer in 2004. Blood Mountain followed with the Grammy-nominated "Colony of Birchmen," and Crack the Skye (2009) remains a fan favorite. The Hunter (2011) debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 and earned another Grammy nomination for "Curl of the Burl," and Once More 'Round the Sun peaked at number six. Emperor of Sand (2017) delivered the Grammy-winning single, and Hushed and Grim arrived in 2021. Hinds left the band in March 2025 and died months later; Sanders, Kelliher and Dailor carry the band forward, releasing Marrow Deep in 2026.
