Book Cat Power

Cat Power won the Shortlist Music Prize in 2006 for The Greatest, the soul-steeped album she recorded in Memphis with veteran studio musicians from the city's golden era. Born Chan Marshall in Atlanta, she grew up across the American South and played in local bands before opening for Liz Phair in 1993. Teaming with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and guitarist Tim Foljahn, she recorded her first two albums, Dear Sir and Myra Lee, in a single day in 1994, then signed with Matador Records for What Would the Community Think (1996). Moon Pix (1998), made with members of Dirty Three, established her as a major indie voice, and The Covers Record (2000) began her celebrated tradition of reinventing other writers' songs, continued on Jukebox (2008) and Covers (2022). You Are Free (2003) featured Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, and the self-produced Sun (2012) became a Billboard 200 top-ten album. Wanderer followed in 2018. In 2023 she released Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, recreating Bob Dylan's famous show song for song. She has also been a longtime muse for Chanel. Her smoky, hushed voice makes every concert feel intimate.
