Marc Randolph is an American entrepreneur, startup advisor and speaker best known as the co-founder and first CEO of Netflix. A serial founder, he helped launch the U.S. version of MacUser magazine in 1984 and co-founded the computer mail-order companies MacWarehouse and MicroWarehouse, and he is also credited with helping start the American edition of Macworld. His first job after college, in 1981, was running a small mail-order operation at Cherry Lane Music Company in New York, where he taught himself direct marketing by selling sheet music straight to customers. Those early lessons in tracking customer behavior and in the power of fast delivery to keep customers loyal later shaped the design of Netflix, whose subscriber growth was built on that insight. Randolph serves as a board member at Chubbies Shorts and Looker Data Sciences and has advised startups including Getable, Rafter and ReadyForce. A former mountain guide who compares starting a company to leading an expedition, he chairs the board of trustees of the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming, and serves on the board of 1% for the Planet.
