Book John Major
Sir John Major is a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997, leading the Conservative Party throughout. Leaving school before 16, he took a job in insurance, became active in the Young Conservatives from 1959 and won a seat on Lambeth Council in 1968. He entered Parliament in 1979 as the member for Huntingdon, representing the seat until 2001. Under Margaret Thatcher he rose quickly through the ranks, serving as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer before winning the 1990 leadership contest to become prime minister. His government introduced the Citizen's Charter, replaced the poll tax with Council Tax, led Britain through the Gulf War and negotiated the Maastricht Treaty. After leaving office he turned to writing, business, sport and charity work, publishing a 2007 history of cricket's early years that won a British Sports Book Award. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 2005 and is a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. Major is a measured, wry speaker on leadership, statecraft, Europe and lessons from the top of government.
