Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum rules Dubai and serves as prime minister and vice president of the United Arab Emirates, offices he took on in 2006 after the death of his brother Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Born in 1949, he received private lessons in Arabic and Islamic studies as a boy, studied English in Britain and graduated from Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot as the leading Commonwealth cadet, earning the sword of honour, later training as a pilot in Italy. He became the UAE's first minister of defence in 1971. Under his leadership Dubai grew into a global city, with landmark projects including the Palm Islands, the Burj Al Arab and the Burj Khalifa, and state-backed companies such as the Emirates airline, the Jumeirah Group and DP World. He founded Dubai Media City, Dubai Holding, the Al Jalila Foundation and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation. A keen horseman, he founded the Godolphin stable and Darley Racing, and in 2012 won the FEI World Endurance Championship over 160 kilometres. He set out his outlook on leadership in the book My Vision: Challenges in the Race for Excellence (2006).
