Book Gary Locke
Gary Locke is a lawyer, former governor and onetime ambassador whose career broke barriers at the state and national level. A former prosecutor, he won a South Seattle seat in the state House in 1982, where he chaired the Appropriations Committee, and in 1993 he became King County executive. In 1996 he won the governorship, and as Washington's 21st governor from 1997 to 2005 he became the first Chinese American governor in the nation and the first Asian American governor in the continental United States. Known as a moderate Democrat, he won reelection in 2000 and delivered his party's response to the 2003 State of the Union address. Under President Obama he led the Commerce Department in 2009 to 2011, then became the first Chinese American U.S. ambassador to Beijing, serving 2011 to 2014. From 2020 to 2023 he was interim president of Bellevue College, and since 2021 he has chaired the Committee of 100. His honors include the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and a honorary doctorate from Peking University (2006). Locke speaks with rare authority on U.S.-China relations, trade and public leadership.
