Book Esko Aho
Esko Aho is a Finnish statesman who served as Prime Minister of Finland from 1991 to 1995, taking office at just 36 as the youngest head of government in his country's history. First elected to the Finnish Parliament in 1983, he led the Centre Party from 1990 to 2002 and headed a centre-right coalition through a demanding period in modern Finnish history. His signature achievement was steering Finland into the European Union, persuading a rural party base that was deeply skeptical of membership, and his government confronted the severe early-1990s depression with tough fiscal discipline. Aho later spent time at Harvard leading a study group on the EU and moved into the corporate world, including work with Nokia. His honors include the Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland (1992), Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (1993), and Estonia's Cross of Liberty and Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana (2003). As a speaker he offers first-hand perspective on leadership in crisis, European integration, and the meeting point of government and global technology.
