Book Ehud Olmert
Ehud Olmert, an Israeli lawyer and statesman, was prime minister of Israel between 2006 and 2009. Raised in a political family, he won his first seat in the Knesset for Likud in 1973 at the age of 28 and went on to hold a string of national posts, including minister without portfolio and, from 1990 to 1992, Minister of Health. In 1993 he was elected Mayor of Jerusalem and led the city for two consecutive terms before returning to national government in 2003 as Designated Acting Prime Minister while also running the trade and communications ministries. In late 2005 he joined Ariel Sharon in leaving Likud to form the Kadima party, and in January 2006 he became acting prime minister, then led Kadima to form a government after elections that March. His time in office included the 2006 Lebanon War and several rounds of peace negotiations with the Palestinians, among them the 2007 Annapolis Conference. Olmert offers audiences an insider's perspective on Middle East diplomacy, security and statecraft from the very top of Israeli government.
