Book Juan Manuel Santos
Juan Manuel Santos is a Colombian statesman who served as president of Colombia from 2010 to 2018 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016. Trained as an economist and working first as a journalist, he comes from the family that for decades controlled El Tiempo, the country's newspaper of record. Santos was named Colombia's first minister of foreign trade in 1991 and became minister of finance and public credit in 2000. In 2005 he co-founded the Social Party of National Unity, known as the Party of the U, and in 2006 he became minister of national defence, taking a hard line against FARC and other armed groups. Elected president in 2010, he went on to lead the long negotiations that produced a peace agreement with FARC, the work recognized by the Nobel committee. His other honors include a Global Citizen Award (2015), the Kew International Medal (2017), the Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic and honorary doctorates from the Sorbonne and the University of Lleida. Santos speaks with authority on conflict resolution, negotiation, leadership under pressure and the long road from war to peace.
