Laura D'Andrea Tyson is an American economist, educator and corporate director who broke barriers at the highest levels of economic policy. President Bill Clinton chose her to lead the White House Council of Economic Advisers, where she served as the 16th chair from 1993 to 1995, and she then became the second Director of the National Economic Council from 1995 to 1996. No woman had held either job before her, and only one other person has ever held both. During those years she was a prominent advocate for the GATT trade agreement. Returning to academia, she was Dean of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business from 1998 to 2001 and Dean of London Business School from 2002 to 2006, again the first woman to lead either school. She has also taught at Princeton University. Today she holds a Distinguished Professor post in the graduate school at Haas and a senior fellow at the Berggruen Institute. A Council on Foreign Relations member since 1987, she has served on the boards of Morgan Stanley, AT&T and Eastman Kodak, and she received the Berlin Prize in 2019. Tyson offers authoritative insight on global economics, trade and leadership.
