Book Jerry Brown
Jerry Brown is an American lawyer, author and politician whose career in California public life spans five decades. A Democrat born in San Francisco and educated at UC Berkeley and Yale Law School, he began as a trustee of the Los Angeles community college board before winning election as California secretary of state in 1970. In 1974, at 36, he became the state's youngest governor in 111 years, serving two terms from 1975 to 1983. He also sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, 1980 and 1992 and chaired the California Democratic Party from 1989 to 1991. Brown returned to elected office as mayor of Oakland from 1999 to 2007 and then as state attorney general from 2007 to 2011. He won the governorship again in 2010 and served until 2019, making him both one of the youngest and the oldest governors in California history. With over 16 years in the office, he ranks among the longest-serving governors in the nation. Brown speaks with rare perspective on leadership, governance, climate and public service.
