Book Enigma
Enigma is the German music project created in 1990 by Romanian-German producer and musician Michael Cretu, who set out to build a mystical, rule-breaking blend of new age, worldbeat and electronic sound. The debut album MCMXC a.D. (1990) became the project's biggest success, carried by the global hit "Sadeness (Part I)" and its haunting fusion of Gregorian chant and dance beats. The Cross of Changes (1993) brought in tribal and ethnic textures and passed eight million copies sold worldwide, and Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi ! (1996) merged both approaches. The Screen Behind the Mirror (2000) pushed toward darker electronics, followed by the more pop-leaning Voyageur (2003), the cosmic, operatic A posteriori (2006) and Seven Lives Many Faces (2008). The Fall of a Rebel Angel arrived in 2016, and Visionary Sound Ritual followed in 2026. Enigma has earned two Grammy nominations across ten studio albums. Its music remains a touchstone for atmospheric, cinematic sound, instantly recognizable from the first chant and drum loop.
