Raised in Elmira, New York, he started out in 1971 by opening People's Place, a store that mixed clothing with music and culture, and grew it into a chain of jeans and fashion shops in upstate New York during the 1970s. In the 1980s he launched his own menswear line built on a fresh take on preppy American style, and the company later expanded into women's clothing, fragrance and luxury goods before going public in 1992. In 2005 he appeared on the CBS reality competition The Cut, and he remains the brand's principal designer, guiding its creative direction. Hilfiger received the Humanitarian of the Year honor in 2006 and the CFDA's Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and he tells his story in American Dreamer: My Life in Fashion & Business. He speaks on branding, entrepreneurship and building an iconic American label.
