John Sculley ran two of America's best-known brands. As president of PepsiCo from 1977 to 1983 he championed the Pepsi Challenge, the taste-test campaign that won market share from Coca-Cola, and in April 1983 he became chief executive of Apple, leading the company until 1993. During his decade at Apple, annual sales grew tenfold and the Macintosh line branched into new models aimed at different kinds of buyers, with 1989 to 1991 remembered as a high point for the Mac. He told the story of that move in his 1987 book Odyssey: Pepsi to Apple. Since leaving Apple he has invested in and helped build high-tech startups, including the smartphone maker Obi Worldphone, which he founded. Today he speaks and writes about disruptive marketing strategy, drawing on a career that runs from the cola wars of the 1970s through the rise of the personal computer, with lessons on brand building, product launches and leading companies through rapid change.
