Michael Chertoff is an American attorney and national security leader who served as the second U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush, taking over from Tom Ridge on February 15, 2005, and staying one extra day into the Obama administration. Before leading the department, he had a distinguished legal career as a federal prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney General, U.S. Attorney for New Jersey and judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. After law school he clerked for Judge Murray Gurfein of the Second Circuit and then for Justice William J. Brennan Jr. of the Supreme Court. He co-authored the USA PATRIOT Act. After government service he co-founded the Chertoff Group, a risk management and security consulting firm, served as senior of counsel at Covington & Burling, and chairs the board of Freedom House.
