Book Matt Groening
Matt Groening is the American cartoonist who created The Simpsons, Futurama and Disenchantment. Born in Portland, Oregon, in 1954, he moved to Los Angeles in 1977 and built a cult following with his weekly comic strip Life in Hell, which ran until 2012. When producer James L. Brooks approached him in 1985 to make animated bits for The Tracey Ullman Show, Groening invented the Simpson family instead, and those shorts grew into The Simpsons, which premiered as a series in 1989 and became the longest-running American primetime series. With David X. Cohen he launched Futurama in 1999, a comedy set in the year 3000 that later found new homes on Comedy Central and Hulu, and he followed it with Disenchantment for Netflix in 2018. His shelf holds 14 Primetime Emmy Awards, the Reuben Award (2002), a British Comedy Award (2004), the Winsor McCay Award (2012), induction into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame (2016); he has a Walk of Fame star. He also produced The Simpsons Movie (2007), founded Bongo Comics Group, and speaks with dry wit about cartooning, satire and creative ownership.
