Book Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow is an American director whose taut, physical filmmaking has shaped the modern action and political thriller. She began with the biker picture The Loveless (1981) and built her name through a run of genre films including Near Dark (1987), Blue Steel (1990), Point Break (1991), Strange Days (1995) and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002). Her Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker (2008) made history when she became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, and the film also won Best Picture along with a BAFTA for Best Direction and a Directors Guild of America Award. She followed with Zero Dark Thirty (2012), which earned another Best Picture nomination, then Detroit (2017) and A House of Dynamite (2025). Her work extends to television, including episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street, and her documentary producing on Cartel Land (2015) brought a Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. As a speaker, Bigelow offers a rare inside view of breaking barriers in Hollywood, building tension on screen and telling hard-edged stories drawn from real events.
