Michael Bay is an American director and producer whose blockbuster action films have defined the modern summer movie. A 1986 Wesleyan graduate who majored in English and film, he continued his studies at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design and then directed commercials and music videos at Propaganda Films, earning a Clio for a Red Cross commercial in 1992 and the Grand Prix Clio for the famous "Aaron Burr" Got Milk? ad. Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson then hired him for his feature debut, Bad Boys (1995). He followed with The Rock (1996), Armageddon (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001) and Bad Boys II (2003), and went on to direct the first five Transformers films, including Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Dark of the Moon (2011), as well as 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) and Ambulance (2022). Armageddon and Pearl Harbor each earned four Academy Award nominations, with Pearl Harbor winning for sound editing. Bay co-founded the commercial house the Institute and co-owns a production company that remakes horror films. He speaks about spectacle, visual storytelling and making films on a massive scale.
