Book Johnny Gill
Johnny Gill is the Washington, D.C. singer whose rich baritone made him a defining new jack swing voice and the sixth member of New Edition. The son of a Baptist minister, he began singing at five in a family gospel group with his brothers and later studied at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. His childhood friend Stacy Lattisaw persuaded him to cut a demo at 16, which led to a debut album on Cotillion Records, the duet set Perfect Combination with Lattisaw, and a second solo album, Chemistry, in 1985. Michael Bivins brought him into New Edition in 1987. His self-titled 1990 album delivered the hits "My, My, My", "Rub You the Right Way", "Fairweather Friend" and "Wrap My Body Tight". In 1997 he teamed with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat in the trio LSG, which released Levert and later LSG2. In 2014 Gill launched his own label, J Skillz Records, with Game Changer and its singles "Behind Closed Doors" and the title track, then followed with Game Changer II in 2019. He still tours solo and with New Edition.
