New Edition is the R&B and pop vocal group from Boston's Roxbury neighbourhood that set the template for the modern boy band. Formed in 1978 by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant, the group broke through in the early 1980s with "Candy Girl", "Cool It Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man", most of them sung by Tresvant. Brown left for a solo career in late 1985, and Johnny Gill joined in 1987. By 1990 Gill and Tresvant had solo albums out while Bell, Bivins and DeVoe found new success as Bell Biv DeVoe. All six members came together in 1996 for the album Home Again, and the group has reunited many times since, releasing One Love in 2004 and marking the 30th anniversary of "Candy Girl" with a six-man reunion in 2011. New Edition received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in January 2017, the same week BET premiered the three-part drama The New Edition Story. Later honours include the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022 and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2023.
