Trained in theater at The Catholic University of America and seasoned through eight-plus seasons with Minneapolis's Guthrie Theater company, he made his screen debut in Grumpy Old Men (1993) and broke through as Norm Gunderson, the gentle husband in the Coen brothers' Fargo (1996). TV audiences know him as Steve Carey on The Drew Carey Show (1997 to 2004) and from four seasons of American Horror Story, where his Twisty the Clown became a fan sensation. His film work includes Face/Off (1997), Gothika (2003), Zodiac (2007), Gran Torino (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), The Founder (2016), where he played McDonald's co-founder Mac McDonald, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020). He stepped behind the camera to direct Lucky in 2017, and his television credits also include Turn: Washington's Spies, Big Sky and The White House Plumbers.
