How to Dress Well is the project of Boulder, Colorado, native Tom Krell, a multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and producer known for ghostly falsetto vocals and lush, experimental R&B. Krell first emerged in 2009 by posting free EPs on his blog, releasing six in six months without sharing his name or photo, until critics drew attention to the music. His debut album Love Remains (2010), released on Lefse in the United States and Tri Angle in Europe and Asia, gathered the best of those early recordings and won wide acclaim, earning Pitchfork's Best New Music tag, while Stereogum named him among its 40 Best Bands of 2010. In 2011 he issued the Just Once EP, a string quartet suite built around his "Suicide Dream" songs plus a new version of "Decisions." Krell went on to release Total Loss (2012), “What Is This Heart?” (2014), Care (2016), The Anteroom (2018) and I Am Toward You (2024), working with labels including Weird World and Domino. Spin compared his early work to Shai and TLC filtered through a dreamlike haze. How to Dress Well brings an intimate, emotionally searching performance that blends pop, soul and avant-garde electronics.
