Book Helado Negro
Helado Negro is the stage name of Roberto Carlos Lange, an American musician born in 1980 whose bilingual songs, sung in English and Spanish, explore Latino identity through the lens of his South Florida upbringing as the son of Ecuadorian immigrants. He debuted with the full-length Awe Owe in 2009 and built a steady catalog that includes Canta Lechuza (2011), Invisible Life (2013), Double Youth (2014), Private Energy (2016) and Island Universe Story Four (2018), alongside the three-part Island Universe Story EP series. His 2019 album This Is How You Smile, released on RVNG Intl., earned Best New Music from Pitchfork with a 8.5 score, and he followed it with Far In (2021) and Phasor (2024). His 2015 single "Young, Latin and Proud" is a song about pride and self-confidence in one's roots. Lange received a Joyce Foundation award in 2015, and in 2019 he earned a music fellowship from United States Artists plus a Grants to Artists award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. He also records with Julianna Barwick as the duo Ombre. On stage he offers warm, intimate songs that move easily between two languages.
