Garrett Reisman, an engineer and veteran of NASA's astronaut corps, has lived aboard the International Space Station and flown on two Space Shuttles. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, he earned degrees in economics and mechanical engineering through the University of Pennsylvania's dual-degree Jerome Fisher Program in 1991, then completed graduate study at Caltech, finishing his mechanical engineering doctorate in 1997, where he shared a doctoral advisor with future astronaut Bob Behnken. After serving as a backup crew member for Expedition 15, he joined Expedition 16 aboard the space station and then Expedition 17, returning to Earth on June 14, 2008 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-124. In May 2010 he flew to the station again on Space Shuttle Atlantis for STS-132. His honors include the NASA Distinguished Service Medal (2008) and the Russian Medal "For Merit in Space Exploration." He consults for SpaceX and teaches as a Professor of Astronautics Practice at USC's Viterbi School of Engineering.
