A child prodigy, she joined the Chamber Music Society of Oregon as a violinist at five, then taught herself and trained on guitar and bass, winning scholarships to Portland State University and Berklee College of Music. Her first album, Junjo, came out in 2006 on Ayva Musica, and Heads Up released Esperanza in 2008. Her honors comprise five Grammy Awards, a Boston Music Award, a Soul Train honor and honorary doctorates from Berklee and from CalArts. She has also taught at Berklee and at Harvard University.
