Trombone Shorty is the New Orleans trombonist, trumpeter and bandleader who blends jazz, funk, rock, pop and hip-hop into a high-octane sound rooted in his hometown's brass band tradition. Born Troy Andrews and raised in the Tremé neighborhood, he grew up surrounded by second-line parades and a deeply musical family. He picked up the trombone at age four, and in 1990 Bo Diddley invited the youngster onstage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival; by six he was leading his own brass band. His recordings span Trombone Shorty's Swingin' Gate (2002), 12 & Shorty (2004) and Trombone Shorty Meets Lionel Ferbos (2005) through Backatown (2010), For True (2011), Say That to Say This (2013), the Blue Note release Parking Lot Symphony (2017), Lifted (2022) and Second Line Sunday (2025). He has earned five Grammy nominations and won the Grammy for Album of the Year as part of We Are. His other honors include a Heinz Award in 2016 and a Blues Music Award in 2018, and he toured on The Getaway World Tour in 2017. Live, he delivers explosive horn solos, tight funk grooves and full-tilt New Orleans party energy.
