Book 38 Special
38 Special is a southern rock band that started in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1974 under vocalist Donnie Van Zant, younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant, and guitarist and singer Don Barnes. Signed to A&M Records in 1977, the group released a string of albums that moved from boogie toward polished arena rock, including Wild-Eyed Southern Boys in 1980 with "Hold On Loosely," Special Forces in 1982 with "Caught Up in You," and Tour de Force in 1983. The band later scored with "Teacher, Teacher" and "Second Chance." Further records include Strength in Numbers, Rock & Roll Strategy, Bone Against Steel, Resolution, Drivetrain and Milestone in 2025. Barnes leads the group today, and its radio hits, tight harmonies and twin-guitar sound remain a favorite at state fairs, casinos and festivals.
