Tipper Gore is an American advocate for mental health, children and families who was the nation's second lady for eight years, 1993 through 2001. Before public life took center stage, she worked as a newspaper photographer for The Tennessean in Nashville and continued freelance photography in Washington after her then husband, Al Gore, won election to Congress in 1976. She took an active role in his campaigns from the start and soon organized the Congressional Wives Task Force to study and write about social issues. In 1984 she began volunteering in homeless shelters and went on to form Families for the Homeless to raise money and public awareness. In 1985 she co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center with Susan Baker and others, pushing for voluntary labels on albums with explicit lyrics. Over her decades in public life she has championed mental health awareness, women's and children's causes, LGBT rights and the fight against homelessness. Gore speaks from long experience on advocacy, family and mental health, and on what it takes to turn a personal concern into a national conversation.
