Ted Nugent is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter known to rock fans as the Motor City Madman. He first made his name as lead guitarist of the Amboy Dukes, a psychedelic and hard rock band formed in 1963, before launching a solo career in the mid-1970s. His first three solo albums, Ted Nugent (1975), Free-for-All (1976) and Cat Scratch Fever (1977), along with the concert set Double Live Gonzo! (1978), sold in the millions, and the 1977 title track "Cat Scratch Fever," which he sang himself, remains his signature hit. Early on he shared vocal duties with singers including Derek St. Holmes, Meat Loaf, Charlie Huhn and Brian Howe. Around the turn of the 1990s he was a member of the supergroup Damn Yankees. His later albums include Weekend Warriors (1978), State of Shock (1979), Scream Dream (1980), Love Grenade (2007), The Music Made Me Do It (2018) and Detroit Muscle (2022). Nugent is famous for playing a Gibson Byrdland, for his frenzied, blues-based guitar attack and for high-energy concerts that have made him a fixture of hard rock stages for decades, delivering riff-heavy classics with showmanship.
