Book Small Black

Small Black is an indie band from Brooklyn, New York, featuring Josh Kolenik on lead vocals and guitar, Ryan Heyner on guitar and keyboards, Juan Pieczanski on bass and guitar, and Jeff Curtin on drums. Kolenik and Heyner started the project experimenting with lo-fi, loop-based recording, cutting their first EP on vintage keyboards and samplers in an attic during the winter of 2008-2009. That acclaimed Small Black EP led to a deal with Jagjaguwar and the debut album New Chain in 2010. Limits of Desire followed in 2013, with the single "No Stranger" earning steady satellite radio play, and the band later released Best Blues (2015), Cheap Dreams (2021) and the self-titled Small Black (2023). Often linked with the chillwave movement, a label the members themselves avoid, their music draws on influences from the Human League, OMD and David Bowie to Wu-Tang Clan. Small Black has toured steadily since 2010, supporting Washed Out and playing festivals including Primavera Sound, SXSW, Fun Fun Fun Fest and Capitol Hill Block Party. Live, they deliver dreamy synth textures, hazy guitars and hypnotic grooves wrapped in warm, nostalgic melody.
