Book Rina Sawayama
Rina Sawayama changed the rules of British music: after her acclaimed 2020 debut album SAWAYAMA was ruled ineligible for the Mercury Prize and Brit Awards because she lacks British citizenship, her #SawayamaIsBritish campaign, backed publicly by Elton John, led the BPI to open both awards to long-term residents. Born in Niigata, Japan, and raised in London from age five, the singer, actress and model self-released her debut EP, Rina, in 2017, then signed with Dirty Hit. SAWAYAMA, produced largely by Clarence Clarity, brought her a television debut performing "XS" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and in 2021 she re-recorded "Chosen Family" as a duet with Elton John. She covered "Enter Sandman" for The Metallica Blacklist and remixed "Free Woman" with Clarity for Lady Gaga's Dawn of Chromatica, and Gaga has called her an experimental pop visionary. Her second album, Hold the Girl, arrived in 2022 after The Dynasty Tour, and in 2023 she made her film debut opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 4. Newsweek Japan named her among 100 Japanese people respected by the world.
