Pink Floyd are the English rock band that turned the album into a total experience of sound, concept and spectacle. Started in 1965 in London by Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour arriving in 1967, the group began in the psychedelic underground with "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" (both 1967) and the debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. After A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) and Meddle (1971), they released a run of landmark records: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). Their best-known songs include "Money" (1973), "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" (1979), which topped the Billboard Hot 100, and "Comfortably Numb" (1979). Later albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994) were backed by huge stadium tours. The band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and received the Polar Music Prize in 2008. Their legacy rests on immersive, cinematic live shows and some of the most enduring music in rock.
