Nas is the Queensbridge rapper, producer and entrepreneur whose 1994 debut, Illmatic, has been inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry, and who won the Grammy for Best Rap Album with King's Disease among 17 nominations. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, he made his recording debut on Main Source's "Live at the Barbeque" in 1991 and signed with Columbia Records the following year. His second album, It Was Written (1996), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 behind "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)" with Lauryn Hill. Stillmatic, God's Son and the double album Street's Disciple followed in the early 2000s, and he later moved to Def Jam for Hip Hop Is Dead and an untitled 2008 album. Distant Relatives, his 2010 collaboration with Damian Marley, directed its royalties to charities in Africa. A late-career partnership with producer Hit-Boy yielded the King's Disease trilogy and the Magic series, and Light-Years arrived in 2025 as his long-awaited joint album with DJ Premier. Beyond music, he co-founded Mass Appeal Records and his earlier label, Ill Will Records.
