Book Emmanuel Jal
Emmanuel Jal is a rapper, actor, author and activist, born in South Sudan and now a Canadian citizen, who turned his experience as a former child soldier into music about peace and survival. Born in Tonj in what is now South Sudan, he was recruited by rebel forces as a boy and later rescued by aid worker Emma McCune, who brought him to Nairobi. His first album, Gua, moved between five languages, including Arabic, Nuer and Swahili, and its title track became a number-one hit in Kenya. Ceasefire (2005) paired him with Sudanese musician Abd El Gadir Salim, and later albums include Warchild, See Me Mama, The Key and Naath, a collaboration with his sister Nyaruach that was nominated for a Juno Award. He performed at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert in London's Hyde Park in 2008, the same year the documentary War Child, about his life, won the audience award at the Tribeca Film Festival. His memoir followed in 2009, and he acted in the 2014 film The Good Lie. He founded the education charity Gua Africa and has received the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent and the Dresden Peace Prize.
