Book Janet Evans
Janet Evans is an American swimmer and one of the great distance freestylers in Olympic history. Growing up in Placentia, California, she was racing by age five and setting national age group marks by eleven. In 1987, at just 15, she broke the world records in the 400, 800 and 1,500-meter freestyle, and in the late 1980s she became the first woman to own all three of those world records at once. Across the 1988 and 1992 Olympics she won four golds in the 400 and 800 freestyle, and no American woman before her had taken four individual Olympic swimming titles. She was also a world champion. Evans swam for Stanford University under Hall of Fame coach Richard Quick, and she received the Honda Sports Award as the top female college swimmer of 1988 to 1989. Her place in the sport was cemented with her induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2001. With a story that runs from a teenage record breaker to an Olympic legend, Evans shares lessons about goal setting, hard work and performing under the brightest lights in sport.
