Book Candi Staton
Candi Staton is a five-time Grammy-nominated singer known as the First Lady of Southern Soul, whose 1976 disco classic "Young Hearts Run Free" topped the US R&B chart. Introduced to producer Rick Hall by Clarence Carter in 1968, she recorded sixteen R&B hits at Hall's FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, earning Grammy nominations for her soulful versions of Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" and Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto." She appeared on Soul Train in 1972 and moved into disco with producer David Crawford, scoring with "Young Hearts Run Free," "Nights on Broadway" and "Chance." Her 1986 collaboration with the Source, "You Got the Love," became her biggest record in Europe and has been remixed and revived many times since. In the 1980s she turned to gospel, co-founding Beracah Ministries in Atlanta and recording albums including Make Me an Instrument and Love Lifted Me, work that led to her induction into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. She later returned to soul with His Hands (2006) and Who's Hurting Now? (2009), followed by Life Happens, It's Time to Be Free, Unstoppable and, in 2025, Back to My Roots.
