Book Bernard Kouchner
Bernard Kouchner is a French physician, humanitarian and statesman whose work helped shape modern emergency medical aid. After serving as a Red Cross doctor in Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War in 1968, he co-founded Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in 1971 and later established Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) in 1980, building organizations that send medical teams into crisis zones around the globe. He moved into government in 1988 and held a series of senior posts, including minister in charge of health, Member of the European Parliament from 1994, and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Kosovo in 1999. From 2007 to 2010 he served as France's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs. Since 2015 he has led a healthcare workstream for the Agency for the Modernisation of Ukraine. His honors include the M100 Media Award in 2006 and the Victor Gollancz Prize in 2014, along with state orders from Poland, Romania and Ukraine. Kouchner speaks with rare authority about humanitarian action, global health, diplomacy and the duty to intervene when civilians are in danger.
