Book Apollo's Fire
Apollo's Fire is an American period-instrument Baroque orchestra devoted to early music from the Renaissance through the early Romantic era. Taking its name from the Greek deity of sunlight and song, it was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1992 by conductor and harpsichordist Jeannette Sorrell, a former student of Leonard Bernstein and Roger Norrington, and since 2021 it has also been based in Chicago. Its players are early music specialists drawn from across North America and Europe. The ensemble won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album for Songs of Orpheus (2018), shared with tenor Karim Sulayman. With nineteen studio albums, its recordings range from The Brandenburg Concertos (2000), L'Orfeo (2007), Messiah (2010), Vespers of 1610 (2010) and The Four Seasons (2021) to Israel in Egypt (2023) and Mass in B minor, BWV 232 (2026). It is equally known for imaginative crossover programs such as Scarborough Fayre: Traditional Tunes from the British Isles and the New World, Come to the River: An Early American Gathering, Sephardic Journey: Wanderings of the Spanish Jews and Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain. Apollo's Fire brings virtuosic, vividly theatrical performances.
