Book Sir James Galway
Sir James Galway is the Belfast-born flautist known around the world as "The Man with the Golden Flute". Born in December 1939 into a working family steeped in the city's flute-band tradition, he learned from an uncle at nine and by the age of eleven had swept every Belfast flute title in a single day. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and the Paris Conservatoire before taking his first orchestral post at Sadler's Wells. From 1969 to 1975 he was principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan, then left to build a solo career that made him a household name far beyond classical audiences. His 1978 instrumental recording of John Denver's "Annie's Song" became a signature piece, and in 1990 he joined Roger Waters on stage for The Wall – Live in Berlin. Galway was made an OBE in 1977 and knighted in 2001, the first wind player to be given that honour, and in 2005 he received the Classic Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. He continues to perform and teach.
